Supporting Ahold’s First CO₂ Remodel

When Ahold began planning a full-store remodel at their Hannaford location in Kingston, NY—while simultaneously transitioning to a CO₂ refrigeration system—they turned to Lowe Rental for help executing a complex project with minimal disruption. What began as a short-term need for ten refrigerated cases over six weeks evolved into a 39-week phased solution that kept over 90% of store sales intact throughout construction.

Working closely with partner Abby Design, Lowe Rental delivered a flexible layout using our modular temporary cases, which allowed store operations and contractor access to coexist efficiently. As construction needs changed, so did the layout. This phasing process allows the best access for both workers and customers while work is being done.

In one key area, contractors needed access to build a new rack room, originally planned by shifting existing multideck cases. Instead, mobile solutions allowed contractors to simply move the temporary cases each night—then return them each morning—without impacting merchandising or customer experience.

This adaptability proved essential not only in the meat and dairy areas but also in produce, where space limitations and older store layouts made traditional refrigeration relocation nearly impossible. The Refrigeration as a Service model with Lowe Rental provided the Hannaford team with a low-impact, high-agility solution that kept customers shopping and the remodel on track.
